Edelman Trust Barometer

Last week was a big week in the Edelman calender: the publication of our annual Trust Barometer. Our CEO Richard Edelman has written up the headlines and changes here.

Among the many intriguing results were the views on Trust in the Media. The survey is a global one, taken from an actively media engaged, educated, business community. Overall, this year there was a slight rise in trust in media, along with all other institutions ( government, business, NGOs) perhaps due to a feel better factor as we emerge from the financial crisis. However on a country by country basis, there were falls in trust in the media, particularly in the UK, apart from in the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands and Poland.

The poor UK showing can perhaps be put down the the phone hacking scandal among other factors. The sense of optimism and self confidence in the UAE may extend to their media too. However, I don’t know what may account for increased trust in the media in the Netherlands and Poland. Any thoughts? I’d love to hear.

The difference is now there is far more scrutiny. For us, our sites have contributions from journalists, players, ex-players and coaches. Some of our contributors have worked for or played for NBA teams, some for Division I programs. So while we constantly hear the ‘old media’ complaining about our new media, we can’t help but wonder who decided they were the experts.

[...] But having spent the last few years working in the renewable energy and cleantech sectors, which seems to be populated by energetic, positive people, I have to say it was all a bit depressing. Don’t businesses operating in the traditional energy sector have anything good to say about what they do? It’s not surprising that the energy sector fairs so badly in the Edelman Trust Barometer survey. [...]
